Toolkit: How to prep for interviews
It's a cold winter for many, here is a 3 step prep guide for interviews -- you will get through
I have had a lot of people reach out (including Wise alum, btw — reach out to your old colleagues!) letting me know they were impacted by the ice cold job market in technology. I put this guide together to help them navigate interviewing. The key is not to be passive in interviews. Guide the process, based on what your hiring manager needs.
Here is a formula to crack the code (with a higher resolution and blank PDF below)
Ultimately, you want to be able to say
Company <X> is working to achieve y goal - let’s call it revenue
My hiring manager is accomplishing revenue through <this way>
My role will help my managers goals through <these skills>
I am good at <these skills> for <these reasons>, which should include skills and anecdotes.
Remember, if it is a junior role, you are being told what to accomplish and often how to accomplish it (though you can generate ideas). So showcase your high executive function, high followthrough, and ability to get things done. If it is a senior role, you are usually only told what the problem is — so showcase some solutions.
Dos:
Write out the storyline, and regardless of what questions come your way, frame your answers around the storyline
Think of 3 anecdotes in advance
Donts:
Do not regurgitate your resume, use it as a part of your story only when relevant
Happy holidays — and chin up.
