I have read a few studies, as you can imagine the data is only as good as what the corporations are willing to reveal. As precedent has shown, govt is slower to regulate internet activities due to tech development outpacing the amount of time it takes to legislate. Too early to tell the impact of language learning models on sustainability reports in any formal manner per a Penn professor’s account that I was reading about recently, but there’s enough info to suggest that renewable energy demand will soar and outpace supply with the use of LLMs. IMO we need to search responsibly, but also there needs to be a commitment to generating the energy LLMs require at the corporate and governmental level. Or finding more efficient ways to process the info. Or regulating how much info the LLM requires.

And I’d go past LLMs and put the onus on other energy consuming products as well. Email is also energy consuming, LLMs just require more power. This comment is energy consuming. You reading it is energy consuming and if you choose to engage it will also be energy consuming. LLMs just require more power — yet it’s the most invested in software technology atm. Current modes of energy use are not sustainable. It’s a real issue
